THANK YOU, SCOTT; LIBERAL SLACKTIVISM

Last night on Saturday Night Live, Lewis CK performed the following skit, called, “Thank you, Scott.”

The skit hit close to home for many liberals today, myself included. After the election, an election where the majority of Americans did NOT vote for Trump, many liberals were left dumbfounded. How did Trump get elected? Was it the “forgotten” men and women in rural central America that elected him and why did they feel “forgotten”? Was the Democratic party out of touch with America? Was social liberalism declining in the face of nationalism? —–Nope, not really. Those things may have been variables, but they were not reason enough for an electoral win. I believe the real reason Hillary lost is that liberals became complacent. We had a lovely 8 years with a President who was educated, intelligent, who understood social service and foreign policy and we thought the 8 years with Bush were long behind us. We never thought it possible that a schmuck like Trump could be elected…and then the unthinkable happened.

We had grown complacent. I mean after all, we had seen the acceptance of gay marriage, “Don’t Ask/Don’t Tell” was repealed,  affordable healthcare for all, economic growth at an all time high and unemployment at an all time low (especially significant post Bush administration), Osama bin laden was killed, Sonya Sotomayer was confirmed to the Supreme Court and countless other accomplishments. All of these accomplished without the assistance and support of the Republican Congress, who bad-mouthed and fought Obama tooth and nail. For many of us liberals, the hatred towards Obama felt racist which only further divided us from our right-leaning friends. We lived through an era where SCIENCE WAS REAL, facts mattered, black lives mattered, police mattered, climate mattered—-so this, this $hit show we now find ourselves in was unimaginable and most of us would gladly welcome Bush back into office. Well, if it meant we could get rid of Trump.

The majority of Americans, including Trump, thought his Presidential bid would never amount to a win. Everyday on the campaign trail as Trump displayed his severe character flaws for all the world to see, we became more secure with the idea that this buffoon could never be elected. A pussy grabbing, misogynistic, racist, incompetent businessman, adulterer, and narcissistic liar could never be President. We were firm in our belief that no one was dumb enough to vote for this shyster.

—Boy were we, was I, wrong. I actually had champagne chilling election night. I went to work that day early to vote. I left my house high on emotions, wearing my pantsuit, screaming, “I am off to vote for the FIRST female President” to my family as I headed out the door. I was excited and could not wait to watch the results. That night I must have asked my husband a hundred times as we started watching the results roll in, “There is no way, right, no way he can win.” As the night wore on, it became obvious that many Americans did not feel the same way I did. I went to bed early, champagne undrunk, only to wake at 2:30 am to check my phone. I remember waking my husband saying, “She conceded, she conceded; it is over.” He moaned and cried out in frustration and then rolled over and went to sleep. I did not sleep.

I know my conservative “friends” joke about us snowflakes crying about how Trump won, but I am not ashamed to admit it. I cried, I sobbed. I honestly don’t know how I made it through work the next day. I just wanted to go home and drink that champagne and get bloto. I am in the service industry, I am a nurse and my career is based on helping and supporting others, but my actions felt superficial, mundane and surreal that day. I found solace on Pantsuit Nation on Facebook. I had only found that group a few days before the election and I wish I had found it sooner. The day of election the posts from Americans going off to vote with their children, mothers, grandmothers, families—-made me “happy cry”. I was moved to tears by the thought of our older generation being able to vote for the first female President. I kept thinking about how much this must have meant to them. The photos and posts were my therapy after the election. Living in a Republican strong-hold in Monmouth County, NJ, I felt like I had no one to talk to, other than my husband. My husband is a banker and identified as a soft Republican when I met him but twenty years together has changed this man. His perspectives have changed. He always jokes that I would have divorced him if he voted for George W. Bush but thankfully we never had to test his theory out. As his views broadened, his empathy and willingness to fight for others grew. The narrow paradigm he grew up in changed; we changed together. He switched his affiliation from Independent to Democrat to vote in the 2008 Democratic Primary, as did I. I was always registered as an Independent prior to 2008, even though my policies and beliefs lean far left, as a young adult and even now, I believed I would always vote for the best, most qualified applicant. I guess in this election I was hoping others felt that way too regardless of their political affiliation but alas the most qualified, experienced candidate did not win.

After the election, I got more vocal. I realized in my own complacency that I had not stood up for Hillary. Sure, I voted for her but I did not scream it from the roof top. I did not talk about why I supported her or why I thought she was the better candidate? I did not want to discuss with the crazy person or my father (love ya, Dad, but not your politics) that Hillary did nothing illegal and we did not have to worry about “locking her up”? I did not want to confront my ignorant friend who believes climate change is a hoax, or that person I went to high school with that posted offensive memes that included things like, “Trump that Bitch” or rants that made no logical sense? I did not want to debate anyone and in the same sense, I did not want to offend anyone. I kept quite about my politics. When did talking politics become rude?

It was not like after the election, “the gloves came off” and I was willing to bring everyone to the mats. I would like to believe the awakening was more organic and less retaliatory. I knew that becoming vocal was not going to change the outcome of the election, but I was not willing to stay silent anymore. Silence is why I think Trump was elected, silence and complacency.

After the election I warned my Facebook friends that I was going to speak my mind, I would call out injustices, I would share stories I felt relevant, I would call out Trump on his bad behavior but I also protested, marched in DC and started making phone calls and sending postcards to my congressional representatives and Trump. I got active but as I hold the mirror up to myself, as Lewis CK suggested in his skit, I could do more—and I will continue to #RESIST.

I am Scott but I am also a resister.

JARED KUSHNER RESPONSIBLE FOR PEACE IN THE MIDDLE EAST

Middle Eastern War Zone Chique–preppy blue blazer coupled with dessert colored khakis and the standard issue blue striped button down. The Trump-Terror T-Time Flak Vest is new from Vineyard Vines will soon be available in golf green (this is a satirical comment; please forgive me Shep & Ian). Photo credit: DOMINIQUE A. PINEIRO

Trump has made Jared Kushner, his son-in-law, his principle Middle East advisor; making him responsible for peace in the Middle East.

Sure, that should be easy peasy.

Kushner has been tasked with the following jobs in this administration(2):

  • Running a new government office, The Office of American Innovation
    • Fighting the US Opioid Crisis
    • Handling Veteran’s Affairs
    • Managing Associated Press Reports
  • Reforming the criminal justice system
  • Vague Foreign Diplomat Role (Trump seems to pimp him out using his youth, quiet demeanor and fierce loyalty as a marketing tool; an effort to put forth a more reasonable/moderate front then Breitbart Bannon, Priebus or Miller–although can we just recognize that Miller and Kushner look like they can be fraternity bros)
  • Brokering Peace in the Middle East

What could possibly go wrong?

This 36 year old family member whose background is based on “real estate development”, who has never held office and has NO, yes, NO, experience in foreign policy has been thrown into the fire. His task list is so unreasonable and ridiculous it makes me feel bad for him, almost. When I first heard Trump was sending him to Iraq and eventually expects him to broker peace between Palestinians and Israelis, I thought for sure, Trump was setting him up for failure.

Also, there is that whole Russian thing.

Trump has alway claimed that he, his campaign staff, transition team and administration had no ties to Russia–well, we all know that is NOT true. With Manafort and Flynn gone, the ties to Russia only seem to multiple. Recently added to the list of those who denied Russian contact and then the facts proved them wrong….you guessed it, Jared Kushner.

This week the NYT’s broke a story about Kushner’s omissions of meeting with Russian Ambassador, Sergey Kislyak (same dude that caused trouble for Manafort, Flynn, Jeff Sessions and Carter Page) and the head of the Russian owned State Bank, a meeting which was arranged by Kislyak (4). Now these omissions, just as damning as Jeff Sessions’ omission when he too denied ever meeting with Russians under oath during his confirmation hearing for Attorney General, are shocking because in order for Kushner to gain top level security clearance, Kushner was asked to disclose ALL encounters with foreign government officials for the last 7 years. Kushner’s omission is particularly suspect knowing that Manafort and Flynn have already been burned for similar omissions.

For now there are lots of speculations and an ongoing FBI investigation—I can’t wait to hear the whole story.

SHEROES & HEROES: JON OSSOFF AKA #JONSOLO

Today’s Hero is Jon Ossoff who is running for the open Georgia House seat left vacant by Health and Human Services Secretary, Tom Price.  Constituents of the 6th district in GA will vote on April 18th and there is a chance that Democrats may be able to flip the traditionally red district. Jon has gained nationwide support as Trump and his administrations’ popularity continues to dramatically fall.

Jon is a 30 year old Georgetown graduate who has raised record breaking campaign funds. Yes, he is young but I think we are ready for change.

The Republicans are working hard to keep Jon out of office. Here is an attack ad they are running.

The ad is certainly not high-tech but instead of making Jon look like a drunk frat boy, the clips are endearing and only highlight the normalcy of a college experience. The release of the attack ad sparked the creation and rise of the #JONSOLO hashtag.

Will Trump hate propel Jon into office? God, I hope so.

Today’s Resistance hero is #JONSOLO – may the force be with you, Jon.

SPICY SPICER TREATING THE PRESS LIKE KINDERGARTNERS

We all love Melissa McCarthy’s imitation of Spicy Spicer but The Daily Show’s clip of Spicer being himself…well, this is BRILLIANT. I have said before that I used to feel sorry for Sean, after all selling your soul is typically a desperate move, but I have come to realize that he loves the power.

#20 THINGS I HATE ABOUT TRUMP: DEFENDING BILL O’REILLY

Bill O’Reilly has been in the spotlight today since the news broke he reached settlement with five, yes 5, women who claimed he sexually assaulted them. The settlement payment is reported to be approximately 13 million dollars. As advertisers began to pull their advertising from FOX and the O’Reilly show, one champion for Bill emerges. Guess who? Pussy grabbing Trump, that is who.

“Personally, I think he shouldn’t have settled,” Mr. Trump said in an interview in the Oval Office with Times reporters. “Because you should have taken it all the way; I don’t think Bill did anything wrong.”

“I think he’s a person I know well — he is a good person,” Mr. Trump said.

Trump instead of using the opportunity to publicly take a stance against sexual assault, workplace harassment or misogyny and stand up for the victims–he decides to side with the accused. Are you surprised? This is a man that bragged about grabbing pussy on film which aired during his campaign—and Trumpsters elected him anyway. Can we really be surprised by his depraved character now?

The interesting thing is Trump’s endorsement that O’Reilly is a “good guy” may actually backfire for O’Reilly and FOX. Remember who else Trump called a good guy? Putin, that’s who.

As of this afternoon 30 advertisers have pulled their ads from the O’Reilly Factor. I think it is about time companies start evaluating their relationship with Fox News. What role did Murdock and Fox play in the election of this buffoon? When will the people realize that when FOX uses gimmicks like fear mongering and pushes an alt-right agenda that they are degrading America and all the things that make it great. I am convinced FOX and the FOX FANATICS are one of the reasons (Russia/Putin also playing a role) the US and our Presidency is the laughing stock of the rest of the world.

SHEROES & HEROES: SUSAN RICE

Susan Rice has been under fire today; Trump’s team has made allegations that Rice, former National Security Advisor, was the source of the leak for TrumpRussia intel. What exact leak and why it matters if Trump, his transition team and administration are guilty are unclear. Since the TrumpRussia story began to manifest, instead of focusing on facts and the big picture of Russian interference in the US election and government, Trump and his cronies have only focused on leaks coming out of the White House.

Yes, this was Don the Con’s latest attempt to double down on his lie that Obama wiretapped him. The original allegation made via a tweet on March 4th, only a month ago. Feels like forever; a month with Trump should be measured differently than regular time. I would suggest dog time, but even that does not take into account the length of time and anxiety felt by most Americans, day by day with Trump in office.

So yesterday, right wing media (FOX Fanatics) went crazy after learning Susan Rice made requests to have some identities in the FBI investigation unmasked. Yes, she was the National Security Advisor and this request fell well within the scope of her job…but that did not stop Trumpsters from jumping all over this news, thinking it vindicated Trump’s very ignorant, highly publicized offensive lie.

Unfortunately for Trump a request to unmask identity, which by the way was learned because it was all on record, does NOT equate to illegally leaking classified information.

Do you think Trump, Spicy, FOX or the Trumpsters care about that—Hell, NO!

So today’s sheroe is Susan Rice for having to defend herself all day against the offensive claim that she did anything other than her job.

#19 THINGS I HATE ABOUT TRUMP: FALSE VEILED GESTURES

Yesterday Trump announced he was donating his first quarterly salary to the National Park System and Trumpsters everywhere cheered, “Make American Great Again”—–but there are a few BIG problems with this faux generous gesture:

      1. Trump started his Presidency with a feud with the National Park System. Remember when Trump’s biggest lie was that he claimed his inauguration was bigger than Obama’s and then repeated said lie over and over and over again in an effort to make it true. He called on the National Park System to prove his popularity, eventually forcing the National Park System to release this official photo. Trump actually received the photos the day after his inauguration but he doubled down on his lie (as he ALWAYS does), Spicey Spicer even at one point claimed the media had doctored the images.

2009, left, at President Obama’s first inauguration on the Mall in Washington. 2017, right, the image of President Trump’s inauguration. (National Park Service)
      2. On January 20th, the National Park System account went “rogue” and released the photos and before you could say oppression, the Department of Interior had deleted the twitter account. Thankfully, nothing is ever really deleted on the internet and many had captured the original posts. This sparked tweets about Trump and his admin scrubbing the government sites of climate change and other data they don’t like, aka science/facts. Hence, the Alt US National Park Service Twitter account was formed.
      3. As Trump’s agenda to dismantle the EPA in favor of BIG Coal and BIG business, to defund science and research, to deny climate change and other scientific facts became more clear, rouge US Agency twitter accounts grew in number daily in the early days of this new oppressive administration. Here is a list of some of those accounts, https://twitter.com/ariherzog/lists/alt-and-rogue/members Pissing off smart folks and arguing against science/facts….well, that used to be ineffective but in this “Post Truth” era, lies dominate. Looking at you FOX.
      4. Trump’s decision to give $78,000 to the National Park System, is supposedly earmarked to preserve battle fields, sorry Yellowstone and other parks in need of maintenance. Originally he asked the press to decide where the money went, and changed his mind. Why? Knowing his personality and knowing this donation is insulting to an agency whose proposed budget will leave it on life support, I am calling this as I see it, a vindictive calculated MANipulative move. “”If Donald Trump is actually interested in helping our parks, he should stop trying to slash their budgets to historically low levels,” said Michael Brune, executive director of the Sierra Club. “America’s parks, and the people and economies they support, need real funding, not a giant fake check. Parks are a good investment and we must invest now if we want them to be around for our kids,” Brune added.”
      5. Spicy you can take the “big (referring to physical blown up size, not referring to the value)” check and stick it you know where.

HOW TO SECURE YOUR INTERNET HISTORY FROM THE GOP

The House passed legislation this week that allows internet service providers to sell browsing information without their customers’ consent. Yup, that just happened. I am not a computer expert but I am geeky. So I have been researching what I, an everyday politically minded mom, can do about it. I figured my choices were:

1 Set up https viewing using browsers that support secure https encryption and although I use Chrome and Firefox for some browsing, we use apple devices and safari for most things. Google products (gmail, forms, docs) are all already encrypted and so is Facebook. If you decide to go this route Https Everywhere was recommended and I tested it out on with Chrome as my browser; it took minutes to set up.

2 Another option is to use a Virtual Private Network, VPN,  to encrypt your data. This is great for WiFi connections or if you are using an untrusted ISP server. The https encryption relies on the webpage to provide encryption but not all websites offer https, using VPN means that I control the encryption. VPN also ensures all “traffic” info from my computer is encrypted not just the data.

Don’t worry it is super easy and only took a few minutes.

I went with Private Internet Access, along with good reviews from PC Magazine it was also recommended in a NYT article HERE

Sign up was easy and not expensive; I went with the yearly membership it covers up to 5 devices.

Once you sign up, you can download the app to your phones and iPads. You will see a little warrior man on your laptop to let you know that the VPN is on.

It was also super easy to set up on my phone. Just download the Private Internet Access app and enter your account sign-in information and you are done.

The arrow is pointing to an icon reading ‘VPN” so you know it is functioning.

What are you doing to protect your internet information?

#18 THINGS I HATE ABOUT TRUMP: INCITING VIOLENCE

A Federal judge in Kentucky just ruled against Trump and his lawyers’ request to throw out a lawsuit that accuses him of inciting violence and I for one am grateful.

Three protesters are suing Trump for inciting violence after they were roughed up at a rally on March 1, 2016. They were pushed and punched and it was all caught on film as Trump screams, “Get ’em outta here.” Trump’s lawyers claim that he [Trump] did not want his fans to use force, but unfortunately like the travel ban, it is Trump’s own words and actions that are coming back to haunt him.

His comments about throwing people out, punching them in the face, and carrying them out on stretchers were nauseating and offensive to me during the campaign. This man has no class and his reaction to protesters is to exert dominance and harm. This was one of the many character flaws that I believed would have kept him out of office, but alas…that did not happen. A leader who encourages his fans to hurt those who protest him or don’t agree with him seems like a dangerous, unhinged man to me.

“At the rally, Trump repeatedly said “get ’em out of here” before, according to the protesters, they were shoved and punched by his supporters. Trump’s attorneys sought to have the case dismissed on free speech grounds, arguing that he didn’t intend for his supporters to use force. But Hale noted that speech inciting violence is not protected by the First Amendment and ruled that there is plenty of evidence that the protesters’ injuries were a “direct and proximate result” of Trump’s words (1).”

His fanbase was simply following his orders, his instructions. One of the men accused of harm and caught on film pushing the woman protester who was simply standing there, was wearing his Korean war uniform. In this article the reporter stated the man apologized to the Korean War Veterans Association but it does not mention if he apologized to the woman. I would like to think he did, if his lawyer allowed it. Perhaps he and the others who pushed, shoved and punched protesters were simply caught up in the moment and maybe they regret their behavior but I fear that may be wishful thinking on my part. I picture Jack from Lord of the Flies yelling, “‘Kill the pig! Cut his throat! Kill the pig! Bash him in!’” Trump, like Jack, is a power-hunger dictator who has a propensity towards evil and violence.  You think I am exaggerating–watch the clips and his facial expressions.

“Bamberger later apologized to the Korean War Veterans Association, whose uniform he wore at the rally. He wrote that he “physically pushed a young woman down the aisle toward the exit” after “Trump kept saying ‘get them out, get them out,” according to the lawsuit (2).”

Here is a clip of some of the many times Trump incited and called for violence at his campaign rallies where his deplorable fanbase was eager to comply.

#17 THINGS I HATE ABOUT TRUMP: RUINED APRIL FOOLS DAY

April Fools Day is supposed to be a day filled with pranks and silly jokes but with Donal Trump as President–well..at least today we can excuse his lies and tweets as possible bad jokes.

America is the laughing stock of the world. We have a leader who rants and raves on Twitter, who gets his news and perspective from FOX and other conservative sites, who holds grudges and acts like a toddler–every day is April Fools day as long as Trump is in office.

I think most Americans are spending today wishing it was all an April Fools prank.
